BŘECLAV, CZE – Friday is here and with it come the two semifinal games to determine who will face who in the gold medal game and who will battle for the bronze. While Canada and USA square off in Piešťany, Slovakia, Czechs host Sweden west of the border. Also on schedule are firth-place and seventh-place games.
An epic battle is in store for the fans in the Slovak city of Piešťany where the puck will be dropped between two rivals, Canada and USA. After a perfect group stage, Canadians will be looking to advance to finals and subsequently cap off the tournament winning gold, undefeated. Americans weren’t as impressive in Břeclav, but that might change going across the border. You just never know. Their offense is pretty great, but I don’t think Canadian defensemen would agree.
Just like Canadians, Team Czech Republic is unbeaten after group stage and will be looking to take that to semifinals, facing Sweden. Tre Kronor were pretty impressive in the group stage, except for their big loss to Canada, and can pose the biggest threat to the Czechs so far. Led by two-way defenseman Oliver Kylington and many flashy forwards that make up a working offense, Swedes will be hoping for the Czechs to be mentally unprepared following the huge win over Russia.
Also in Břeclav, Finland and Switzerland will battle for fifth place for second consecutive year, last time Suomi won in shootout. Game updates are available here. Kicking the day off at 2:00 will be Slovaks with Russia, both looking to avoid total failure and win the seventh-place game. Watch live updates here.
