LIBEREC, CZE — Only recently the Washington Capitals decided to go with Swedish-based Czech forward Jakub Vrána as their 13th overall selection at the NHL Entry Draft, but the skilled Prague native has already shown how great that selection can turn out for the team that is led by Russian superstar Alexander Ovechkin.
Vrána may not go overseas just yet as he has a valid contract with Linköping in Sweden, but expect him to charge into the NHL sooner or later. He’s already got experience with professional hockey playing for aforementioned Linköping in 24 regular season games last year, in which he scored two goals and added one assist.
Now the 5’11”top-end prospect is way past impressing only European fans as he took his magic hands across the Atlantic and into the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va., where the annual Capitals Development Camp was held last week. Vrána competed in various scrimmages alongside fellow youngsters, one of which included a shootout after the first period of play.
Hockey fans everywhere around the world should be used to the shootout highlights that Swedish-based players keep on producing, but it will never cease to amaze them.
In other news from DC, the Capitals have signed their second-round pick, Czech goaltender Vítek Vaněček to a three-year entry level contract with the annual NHL salary of $925,000. It is unclear yet whether the 18-year-old Havlíčkův Brod native goes overseas this summer or not, however, he declared that he would like to stay in his home country for at least two more years.
